Case Study

King Arthur’s Coin Collection

A UX/UI case study for a digital coin-tracking app

My Approach & Contributions

Problem

Coin collectors often struggle to:

  • Keep accurate, up-to-date records of their finds.
  • Remember where they found certain coins or what they’re worth.
  • Organize coins by type, year, or value without cumbersome spreadsheets.
  • Stay motivated or engaged in expanding their collections.
  • Current digital tools feel sterile and data-heavy, with little sense of excitement or achievement.

Overview

King Arthur’s Coin Collection is a web + mobile app concept that allows hobbyists and professional numismatists (coin collectors) to catalog, track, and value their coins.
Inspired by the legend of King Arthur’s vault, the app combines collection management, education, and gamified progress in a refined, treasure-like experience

Solution

Design a visually immersive, collector-focused app that makes cataloging coins feel rewarding and enjoyable.
The product merges organization and gamification, wrapped in a medieval-inspired theme that gives collecting a sense of adventure and prestige.

Target Users

Casual collectors: People who pick up coins as a hobby and want a simple visual tracker.

Numismatists:
Serious collectors managing hundreds of coins and seeking historical accuracy.

Treasure hunters & metal detectorists:
Users logging their field finds and market values.

Key Features

1. Add Coin to Collection

Quick-entry form for:
Date
Name / Type
Size / DenominationValue
Condition (preset options: Poor, Good, Fine, Very Fine, Mint)
Origin (country/mint)
Photo (front/back)

2. Preset Collections

Start from popular sets:

U.S. Silver Coins (1940–1964)
State Quarters (1999–2008)
Ancient Coins (Roman & Greek)
“King’s Favorites” custom showcase

3. Coin Vault Dashboard

Grid/card layout for easy scanning

Filters for year, denomination, value range, and completion progress

Quick add/edit shortcuts

4. Gamified Achievements

Earn ranks as you grow your vault:

Page → Squire → Knight → Lord → King Collector
Progress indicators and collectible badges celebrate milestones.

5. Advanced Add-ons

AI Coin Identifier: Auto-detects coin name and value from a photo

Wishlist: Track coins you’re hunting for

Trade Mode: Connect with other collectors to swap or sell

Design Direction

Visual Style: Medieval-meets-modern — parchment backgrounds, golden accents, serif typography.

Color Palette: Deep browns, golds, slate grays, and muted blues.

Tone: Premium yet approachable; a collector’s vault meets an adventure log.

UI Components:

Illustrated icons (crown, sword, shield, coin)

Card-based grid system

Progress rings and badge icons

Subtle scroll-based animations

Design Process

Research & Persona Creation – Interviewed coin collectors and hobbyists to identify organization pain points.

Wireframes & Flow Mapping – Sketched the collection dashboard, “Add Coin” flow, and gamification UI.

High-Fidelity Mockups – Designed a premium theme balancing usability and thematic depth.

Prototype Testing – Iterated based on feedback emphasizing ease of data entry and visual clarity.

UX Goals

  • Simplify data input with smart defaults & presets.
  • Create delight through microinteractions and collectible animations.
  • Encourage user engagement with achievement tiers.
  • Balance aesthetic immersion with clear information hierarchy.
  • Design for cross-platform use (desktop + mobile parity).

The Results

Outcome

A high-fidelity UX/UI concept that turns a typically static data-management task into an immersive and rewarding collecting experience.
The result: A product that transforms the collector’s journey from simple record-keeping to treasure-keeping.
